Detectives Martha Bellamy (Fay Ripley, Cold Feet), Jack Weston (Damien Molony, Being Human), and Charlie Steele (Clare-Hope Ashitey, Children of Men) are back to solve a series of all-new mysteries in contemporary London. From an arson attack that leaves a teenager fighting for his life to a copycat murder that could be the work of a serial killer, Martha and her team work tirelessly to expose the truth behind each crime. Filmed from an eyewitness perspective with improvised dialogue, this one-of-a-kind procedural delivers an immersive, authentic look at police investigations, hailed as “a fresh take on the usual cop show” (The Sun, UK).

What We Thought:

I had never heard of Suspects until the first and second series came my way on DVD. I binged through it quickly and I did the same for series three and four.

The Brits do crime drama pretty flawlessly. Suspects continues to be engaging and not just another detective/police show. American TV is filled with Law & Order and NCIS shows and none separate themselves from others. Because this is unscripted and shot differently, it feels unlike other shows especially American TV.

Series 3 and 4 saw some interesting episodes. It opens with the death of a teacher that was gay and knew of an affair with a student and the principal. An unconscious body is pulled from the Thames with ties to another missing girl. A shady businessman is accused of bombing a house and injuring a teenager. The father of the teenager is accused of kidnapping the businessman’s son. A teenaged girl goes missing and her father is the lead suspect when video shows him fighting with her trans-sexual boyfriend. Season 4 brought a soldier’s disappearance and his father’s protest. The death of a criminal reopens an old case. A clergyman is murdered and then an elderly woman’s death brings a difficult investigation.

Like I said previously about series 1 & 2, the show has style. It feels like it’s happening as you watch it. It feels like you’re part of the investigation. You’re there figuring out the clues along with them.

Like most British shows, you really don’t get enough episodes though. This is only 8 episodes which makes for a quick binge but leaves you wanting more!

Suspects Series 3 & 4 is yet another watchable crime drama out of England. If you know of the show or like this type of programming, then it is definitely…
