What We Thought:
I first saw Captain America: Civil War at the theater and really liked it. Seeing it again on Blu-ray, it still holds up. It’s still one of my favorite movies of the year.
I thought Captain America: The Winter Soldier was a better Captain America film because to me this one feels more like an Avengers flick. This has almost every Avenger we’ve been introduced to already (minus Hulk and Thor) and even adds Black Panther and Spider-Man. Cap is our hero from start to finish, but with so many other Marvel characters in it, it definitely feels like The Avengers more than a stand alone film.
That being said, it’s still a lot of fun. I loved Paul Rudd as Ant-Man in his movie and he’s a scene stealer in this. He’s fantastic and is a perfect fit. I haven’t seen a good Spider-Man since the second Tobey Maguire film, but I will give it to Tom Holland, he’s also a scene stealer in this. I’m actually looking forward to his solo film now because of his performance here.
What I did love most about Civil War was Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie. You can tell these dudes had a ball making this movie. There’s a scene where Steve Rogers kisses someone and the other two are in the car watching and approving. Seeing that scene again, knowing what happened already, I still laughed out loud. I want to hang out with these guys.
Like The Winter Soldier, the action put on-screen by the Russo Brothers is pretty fantastic. It opens with a big sequence, gets into some story, then some more action, story, etc. You have The Winter Soldier Bucky Barnes fighting everyone. Cap fighting Stark. Black Panther fighting Bucky. Bucky and Cap fighting Stark. Spidey swinging in and Ant-Man making jokes and going big. It’s a long movie, but it never feels slow at any point in time.
I will say that seeing it again, it really shows how bad Marvel mishandled Zemo. Zemo is the “bad guy” in the film and he’s disappointing. That’s not Daniel Bruhl’s fault, just the opposite. Bruhl is a fantastic actor, but for whatever reason, Marvel villains aren’t that good. To hinder Zemo by making his story simply about revenge for Sokovia (the plot of Age of Ultron) is lackluster and simplistic story writing. Zemo could have been a great recurring villain because in the books (whether it was the father or son), he was a genius and powerful man. I love Marvel films, but they need to up the ante on their bad guys. They better not screw up Thanos!
The film looks amazing on Blu-ray. The colors of the costumes, the backdrops, the action sequences all shine bright in HD. Audio is top-notch as well. There’s easy to hear dialogue, big explosions and solid score. Bonus features include a 2 part making of, a look at the upcoming Doctor Strange, commentary, gag reel, deleted scenes and more.
Captain America: Civil War is the highest grossing film in the world so far for 2016 and it’s easy to see why. It’s fun. It introduces new characters. It brings characters together that weren’t already together. There’s great action. Evans, Mackie and Stan have great chemistry together. The story leads to the future Marvel films heading our way. If you haven’t seen it, see it. If you’ve already seen it, buy it.
