Based on a true story, this gripping thriller follows British serial killer John Christie (Richard Attenborough), who lures women to their doom in his London flat, and his relationship with his neighbor Timothy Evans (John Hurt).

What We Thought:

Despite starring Richard Attenborough and John Hurt, I was not familiar with 10 Rillington Place. It’s based on a true story and is a pretty solid drama from 1971.

Attenborough plays John Christie, a man who murders a woman in the early 1940s. A few years later, Tim Evans (Hurt) and his wife Beryl (Judy Geeson) move in upstairs with their infant daughter. Christie takes a liking to Beryl and when she gets pregnant for a second time, she asks for help terminating it. Christie doesn’t go along with it, but instead kills her.

Her death makes Tim leave as Christie claims he will take care of everything. Tim eventually caves, is found guilty despite not being the killer as Christie thinks he got away with all of his killings. Soon the walls around him come closing in as all his crimes come to light.

10 Rillington Place is an extremely well acted drama with all three leads doing what they need to do to hold your attention throughout. Hurt was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor BAFTA for his performance. If you are a fan of the film you’ll enjoy the Blu-ray release. If, like me, you aren’t familiar with the film, but like Hurt or Attenborough you’ll enjoy it as well.
