Synopsis:
An obsessed fan stalks his favorite actors from the Friday the 13th films and beyond. As a child, Kelsie Voorhees witnesses the murder of her grandmother, Friday the 13th actress Deborah Voorhees, at the hands of a crazed fanboy. As an adult, she discovers her grandmother isn’t the only victim and the killer is still out there searching for his favorite Friday the 13th cast members and iconic scream queens to slaughter, mirroring his idol Jason Voorhees, as he still can’t seem to separate the characters in the movies from their real-life personas.
What We Thought:
13 Fanboy is a perfect example of great concept, not so great result. Horror movies have been around long enough and have such diehard fans that I could easily see someone killing the actors the way their characters died on screen. Unfortunately the film just isn’t made well enough to really make it the cult hit it should be.
Despite some solid horror names like Dee Wallace and Kane Hodder, the acting in the film is subpar. Sure horror flicks aren’t usually known for great acting, but this was tough to get through. No one really stood out and Wallace is the best of the bunch, but the others looked like low budget indie film actors who’ve never worked before.
I understand it’s not a big budget studio film, but it also looked bad. Mixed in with the not so great acting was its look. I’ve seen no budget movies made with cell phones look better. Maybe they didn’t white balance or didn’t have anyone on set who knew a thing about lighting, but the film looked cheap. Again I know millions of dollars didn’t go into its production, but you can shoot a clearer film with today’s technology.
I will say I liked the kills. It has a decent amount of blood in it and a bit of nudity like you expect in a slasher film, but I wanted more from 13 Fanboy. The concept is brilliant, I just wish the movie was too. It might get a bit of a following because of the concept, but I think people will be disappointed in the resulting film. I know I was. I really wanted to like it and tell all my horror friends and followers about it. Unfortunately it just isn’t the film it should be.
13 Fanboy is out March 8, 2022 from Mill Creek Entertainment.
