What We Thought:

I’ve said it before that I’m a big fan of stand up comedy. I’ve been a fan for a few decades now. What I love about these collections is the level of comedy you get. The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson: Johnny and Friends featuring Steve Martin, Robin Williams & Eddie Murphy is no different. You get some great work from three of the biggest comedians of all time.

I wasn’t old enough to see these guys in their prime. I wasn’t old enough to see these shows when they aired on TV so I’m glad I can watch them now. Eddie Murphy is an all time great, no question about it. Even on TV, where he is limited on the type of language he can use, Murphy is still fantastic. This is some early Murphy, 3 shows in under a year. You can tell he got huge from performance to performance. He was funny in all of it, but you can tell the audience got more excited as he returned.

Robin Williams has 3 appearances, 1984 and 2 in 1991. You could tell Johnny Carson never had a clue what he was going to get out of Williams. I don’t think Williams knew what he was going to give Carson. You forget just how quick the late Robin Williams was. He was instant with a joke or comeback. Carson could prepare all he wanted, he still wasn’t prepared for Robin Williams.

Third is Steve Martin whose appearances run the biggest gap. His shows are from 1976, 1982 and 1991. Of course the first big gap was because he wasn’t allowed back on the show for years. You can kind of see why. But as he aged and got more mature (at least for the audience he was playing to), Martin eventually would become a regular. To me he’s a mix of Murphy and Williams. He has antics like Robin, but can do commentary and punch lines like Eddie.

Like the previous edition with Jerry Seinfeld, this has commercials! You might think it’s bizarre, but to me it adds to the vibe of the collection.

The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson: Johnny and Friends featuring Steve Martin, Robin Williams & Eddie Murphy is a must own for any Carson fan. It’s also great for fans of the three comedians. If you liked the Jerry Seinfeld edition, definitely pick up this one as well.
