Fueled by cheap whiskey and greed, Willie Soke (Academy Award®-winner Billy Bob Thornton), teams up once again with his angry sidekick, Marcus (Tony Cox), to knock off a Chicago charity run by curvaceous Diane (Christina Hendricks). But the arrival of Willie’s horror story of a mother, Sunny (Academy Award-winner Kathy Bates), and “the kid” – Thurman Merman – may upset their plan. You better watch out, Bad Santa 2 is coming to town!

What We Thought:

Bad Santa 2 isn’t the classic the original film is, but it has a lot of laughs and I had a lot of fun with it. We’ve mostly had terrible comedies of late, but this is one of the better ones.

I’ve liked the first film since the first time I saw it. Christmas is perfect for a raunchy comedy and Billy Bob Thornton’s Willie was as raunchy as you could get. He, like the Grinch, grew a bit of a heart towards the end and it showed his true character. His scenes with the young Thurman Merman were hysterical.

This time around he doesn’t have as many scenes with Brett Kelly’s Thurman, but they are still really funny and full of heart. Kelly is a young adult now playing a young adult version of Thurman and I’m glad they brought him back for it.

Tony Cox also returns, but Lauren Graham does not. She’s replaced with Christina Hendricks as a potential love interest for Willie. Kathy Bates joins the cast as well as Willie’s mother. Every cast member gets laughs and are characters that fit them perfectly.

This time around we see Willie still down on his luck. He’s drinking more and Marcus (Cox) convinces him to help rob a charity in Chicago. He runs into his mother who’s part of the gig and Thurman eventually makes his way there as well. Hendricks’ character runs the charity and has a past Willie finds interesting. They all have good chemistry together and I like seeing Bates and Hendricks in less serious roles.

The 4K looks stunning. The picture is ridiculously perfect and pristine. The audio is top-notch with easy to hear dialogue and score. Bonus features include featurettes, gag reel and That’s My Willie animated series.

Bad Santa 2 is a good way to kill 90 minutes. If you liked the first one, you’ll like this sequel. It’s been a long time since the first film, but unlike Zoolander 2, I had fun watching this one.
