In OFFICE CHRISTMAS PARTY, when the CEO (Jennifer Aniston) tried to close her hard-partying brother’s branch, he (T.J. Miller) and his Chief Technical Officer (Jason Bateman) must rally their co-workers and host an epic office Christmas party in an effort to impress a potential client and close a sale that will save their jobs. The latest comedy from directors Will Speck & Josh Gordon (BLADES OF GLORY) co-stars Olivia Munn, Vanessa Bayer, Courtney B. Vance, Rob Corddry, Sam Richardson, Jamie Chung, Randall Park and Kate McKinnon in the funniest holiday movie of the season.
I was hoping Office Christmas Party was better than it looked, but unfortunately it isn’t. Even with a cast of some really funny people, it only has occasional laughs.
I’ve been a fan of TJ Miller for years. I loved his stand up long before he started doing movies. I’ve been a fan of Rob Corddry for years. Jason Bateman has been in some really good things as well. Plus Jennifer Aniston is usually solid in comedies. So what happened here? Why isn’t this really funny?
The biggest problem is, we’ve seen this before. It’s your classic “Oh no, Christmas (party) is ruined, but wait, here comes a miracle!” mixed with a raunchy party movie. Animal House, PCU, Old School, The Hangover are all some of my favorite movies so I like party movies. This is more a Project X though. There’s “outrageous” and weird things happening at the party and it’s just not original. Maybe I’ve matured (no I haven’t).
Combine that with a movie that wants to have some heart and it doesn’t really work. TJ Miller wants to keep his employees’ jobs, give them bonuses and have a great company Christmas party like his dad always did. The CEO who happens to be his sister (Aniston) wants the party cancelled and employees fired. Of course you know that a Christmas miracle is coming and bells will ring and angels will get their wings. Ok, maybe not that part.
I’m also done with Kate McKinnon’s wooden/awkward character she does in almost everything. Kate can be super funny and can improvise on the spot, why is she forced to do this same character over and over again? I thought Vanessa Bayer was much more impressive in this. I laughed or at least smirked more at Bayer than McKinnon and I find her funnier overall.
I will say that Olivia Munn surprised me. I’ve never really had anything against her, but I never quite got why people liked her. I actually liked her in this and I haven’t really liked her in too many other things (cough X-Men Apocalypse). She had good chemistry with Bateman and played a believable character for her.
With the talent in the movie, Office Christmas Party should be something you can watch every holiday season. It’s not. The audience seemed to laugh way more than I did so maybe it will do well at the box office. I’d skip it and rewatch Bad Santa at home.
