I usually put a full synopsis of the film here, but for this one, know as little about it as you can!
What We Thought:
I knew absolutely nothing about The Light Between Oceans other than Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender were in it. I hadn’t seen a trailer and didn’t know it was based on a book. They are two of my favorite actors going so I went and saw it.
I know they are together in real life (or at least were, I don’t keep up to date on celeb personal lives) so I figured it would be some type of love story or at least had a love story involving them. And I was half right.
I say half right because the film starts out as your typical romance movie. Fassbender gets a job working at a lighthouse and falls in love with Vikander. They eventually marry and she moves in with him at the lighthouse. They try having children, but it doesn’t work out for them.
But that changes one day. (If you don’t know anything about the movie/book, skip this section because I knew nothing about this part going into it and the surprise is really good if you don’t know it). A boat hits shore with a baby and dead man inside. They keep the baby and pretend it’s their own. All is going well till they meet the real mother of the child and that’s when the drama part of the story unfolds.
I won’t say what happens from there because you don’t need that spoiled. I will say for a film that starts out like The Notebook, it certainly takes a huge turn that caught me off guard knowing nothing about the movie. This is where Rachel Weisz comes in as well.
The two leads, Fassbender and Vikander, are outstanding. They are hands down two of the best actors in the game. They are both very easy to look at and it makes sense why they would fall in love both on and off-screen. Add in Weisz and it’s a no brainer that this film is one of the best acted films of the year.
Plus there’s the location. The cinematography is beautiful and the film fully takes advantage of its setting. The lighthouse, the land around in, the ocean and sky are just breathtaking in the film. Vikander and Fassbender aren’t the only pretty things to look at in the movie.
For a film I knew nothing about, for a film that is more a romance movie than anything else, I quite liked The Light Between Oceans. It might not be my type of flick on paper, but Vikander is just a joy to watch in everything she does. Fassbender is a top 3 actor and the twist was such a surprise to me that it changed the tone of the film. The film is…
