What We Thought:
Opry Video Classics is a blast from the past. I grew up hearing this music because of my family. The music isn’t a personal favorite of mine, but this collection brought back a lot of memories.
I remember watching Grand Ole Opry performances at my grandmother’s house as a kid. My parents watched them too because my dad was really into Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash. As someone who isn’t a big country music fan, I surprisingly knew a lot of these songs.
Obviously with performances by Cash, Dolly Parton, Waylon Jennings, Conway Twitty, and George Jones, you’re getting some of the biggest names of old school country. This is when country was country and not the pop music it is today. You can put on a Johnny Cash song today and it’s still just as good.
This is an absolute monster box set with 120 recordings. It took me days to get through it all. The Hall of Fame 2 segment is probably my favorite. It had the most songs that I knew.
Legends 2 is one I knew a bunch from as well. My dad listened to Marty Robbins’ Gunfighter Ballads a lot while I was growing up and he’s featured in this segment along with Johnny Cash.
Queens of Country is the one I knew the least about. I know Dolly Parton of course and know the name Loretta Lynn, but a lot of the songs I wasn’t super familiar with.
If you like old school country and live performances then Opry Video Classics is perfect for you. Even as a non fan, I was shocked at how many of these songs I knew and I even remembered some of the performances. This makes a fantastic gift as well and you’ll be giving someone DAYS worth of watching material. If you like the names I’ve mentioned then this is…
