In MUTINY, after witnessing his billionaire boss’s murder and being framed for the crime, Cole Reed (Jason Statham) boards a cargo ship on a one-man crusade to avenge his boss’ death only to discover an international conspiracy.

What We Thought:
Mutiny is pretty much the movie I expected it to be. It has too many plots, but overall it’s a solid Jason Statham action flick. I’m not sure why it’s getting a big theatrical release, but it is a fun crowd pleaser if you have the right crowd.
The biggest issue with the movie is that there are two major plot points and only one is really necessary. Statham plays a former cop who is now the personal security guard for a billionaire shipping magnate. The man is murdered and Statham gets on a ship to seek revenge when he’s framed for the killing. That’s fine. That’s all the movie needs. Unfortunately there’s another plot point about human trafficking that isn’t required. That could have been the plot and you could have cut the billionaire killing because only one is needed for a Statham action flick.
As a big Jason Statham fan I only require a few things in his movies. He must wear a suit (check) or look like the everyday type of guy in a hat and/or jean jacket (also check). He must hurt people (super check). If he can drive a dope car that’s a huge plus (check here as well). Nothing more than a by-the-books story to push the action forward is essential because I want to watch Statham punch people and kick people and shoot people and all of that. The movie has plenty of it plus a meat hook, axe and padlock. I sat there clapping and hooting and hollering along with the crowd. The bald Brit can do these types of roles in his sleep, but I watch all of them.
If Mutiny cut one of its plots it would be a better film. It could cut the completely unnecessary Annabelle Wallis as well. Her former Navy character isn’t productive, doesn’t look like she’s ever held a gun before in her life and at no point did I care if she got back to the States to be with her kid. She’s not a love interest to Statham and really has no purpose. I’m here to watch Jason Statham not her. All that being said, if you are a fan of Statham you’ll like it. It’s nothing groundbreaking or even slightly original, but I’ve watched dozens and dozens of his movies through the years so if you have too, then it is…
