Twin sisters with disfiguring burn scars have their world upended when the mother they’d believed long dead summons them to her bedside and reveals that their father is responsible for her bedridden state as well as the twins’ scars. When she orders the girls to kill their father for what he has done, the sisters must decide whether to seek vengeance or find mercy.
What We Thought:
I am not the target audience for Is God Is so what I think is ultimately irrelevant. Did the film work for me? No. Is it something I’d watch again? No. Ultimately for me it has a great concept, but I didn’t enjoy any of the characters.
The concept is what kept me watching the film. Twin sisters who were burned as children find out their mother is alive, but dying. They grew up in foster care thinking their mother died in the fire they were in. They go to see her on her death bed and she tells them they must kill their father who did this to them. She tells them her side of the story and convince them to seek him out and kill him before she dies. I’m 100% down for something like that. It’s a great revenge story, but the resulting film isn’t great.
My biggest issues are the characters. The twin sisters refer to each other as twin. I have twins in my family and have never heard any of them call the other Twin. Maybe it’s a regional thing, but it bothered me. I’m a white guy from New England, I didn’t know finna was a word until some time last year. They use it constantly and I still don’t know if I understand what it means. Again, maybe it’s a regional thing. I can’t tell you if Is God Is has meaning to it. If it does, I don’t know it.
The only saving grace to the movie is Sterling K. Brown. He’s fantastic in the role. I won’t say who he is in case it’s a spoiler, but he’s great as usual. He’s the only character that has any development to him and the only one that feels like a fleshed out person. All the others are one-dimensional and have nothing to them.
Is God Is might be a hit with the audience it was made for. I’m not that audience. I really didn’t care if the twins got their revenge or not and pretty much wanted everyone gone by the end of the movie. If it’s something that sounds interesting to you then check it out, but for me it’s not in my wheelhouse.
