What We Thought:

Scream 7 is a return to form for the franchise. I do not like Scream 5 & 6 and was very happy the series broke up the “core four” for reasons you may agree or disagree with. I didn’t like those characters because, to me, Scream is about Sidney Prescott taking on Ghostface not some new people I don’t care about. Kevin Williamson went back to the well to make a Sidney focused film while introducing some new characters mixed with others that original fans enjoy.

In true Scream fashion it starts with a fantastic cold open showing people getting stabbed five-ten minutes into the film. Then the story is transported to a small town with some attractive teens and a boy climbing into a bedroom. Enter (literally) Sidney Prescott and the return of Neve Campbell. Sidney and her teen daughter butt heads because Sidney is overprotective in her daughter’s eyes since she doesn’t know all of Sidney’s bloody details. She knows mom has a past the Stab movies are based on, but Sidney has never really gone over it with her daughter. The daughter just wants a normal life doing teen things with her friends. What she doesn’t realize is that that’s all Sidney wants for her family as well.

Of course nothing can be normal in the Prescott family and the ball gets rolling with a throwback character possibly being alive decades later. The small town is shaken with violence as Sidney’s past comes back to bite her once again. Courteney Cox’s Gale Weathers shows up with 2 characters from the previous two films, but they take a backseat to Sidney and Gale as it should be. There is the violence you expect from Scream movies and it honestly might have the best kill of the entire franchise. There are twists and turns and reveals and characters being killed you expect to survive.

Scream 7 is the highest grossing film in the series despite an alleged boycott and controversy. It was panned by critics overall because they let their politics distort their opinion. If you watch the movie as a movie, it’s 100% a Scream flick thanks to Williamson who also directed the film. Original fans will enjoy it because it’s about their characters and has many callbacks and cameos. If you soured on the franchise thanks to 5 and 6 like me, I have to say give Scream 7 a chance. I can see myself rewatching it like the first four films which I can’t say about the “core four” movies. It made too much money not to continue and I think the daughter character will be the final girl going forward. The film looks and sounds fantastic on 4K and the bonus features are well worth watching if you’re a fan. There is some cool old footage of the previous films being made especially with Wes Craven. Campbell loved having Williamson take over and it felt like an homage to Wes and the first movie. It also has the Ice Nine Kills music video featuring the adorable Mckenna Grace who sings as well as acts. After the previous two movies I’m shocked and happy to say, Scream 7 is…
