Synopsis: Die My Love is a portrait of a woman engulfed by love and madness. Anchored by a tour-de-force performance from Jennifer Lawrence.

What We Thought:

Ever pop on a movie and know within a few minutes it’s going to ruin your night? That’s Die My Love. Within minutes I just knew I was in for an unenjoyable 2 hours. Despite the talent involved like Lynne Ramsay, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert Pattinson, Nick Nolte and Sissy Spacek, I sat there miserably counting down the minutes until it was over.

Jennifer Lawrence landed a Golden Globes nomination for her performance in the film and I honestly can’t say why other than she’s Jennifer Lawrence and people liked seeing her crawling like an animal. Nothing about the film is good. Not the characters. Not the look/direction. Not the story, if it even has one. That’s the worst part, you have two great leads and an even better supporting cast and you give them nothing to do.

The film is allegedly about a married couple portrayed by Lawrence and Pattinson who move into Pattinson’s dead father’s home. They soon have a baby and Lawrence seems to spiral out with some sort of postpartum depression. She stays home to take care of the baby, he works and they struggle to coexist. She is all over the map wanting sex, looking at another man, always fighting Pattinson and not wanting to be there or to write. What it all means is beyond me.

I’m thinking Ramsay watched too many Terrence Malick films because it felt like one of his movies. Here’s some pretty people moving around and talking with visuals and nothing making a lick of sense. Did she have an affair? Did she make it up in her head? What was the horse all about?

If you can’t tell I got absolutely nothing out of Die My Love. It was a painful watch and will be a movie I judge people on. If they claim to like it I won’t believe them and will think they just want to sound like they know film. It’s a movie for pretentious film people who claim it’s brilliant and that you just didn’t get it.
