Available for the first time at retail, the greatest performances from The Midnight Special featured in one spectacular 10-disc DVD collection: Burt Sugarman’s The Soul of Midnight Special. Fans of ‘70s soul will thrill to an unforgettable line-up of legendary soul artists performing their greatest hits uncut and unedited — just straight-from-the-heart singing with live musicians in front of a live audience. And now, Time Life delivers a singular set featuring a collection of more than 130 live, uncut performances from 1972-1980 – many not seen since their original broadcast!

What We Thought:

Burt Sugarman’s The Soul of Midnight Special is a pretty amazing box set. This 10-disc set will have you singing and dancing for days. It is packed with live performances of iconic musicians. You may have heard of a few of these performers, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Earth, Wind & Fire, Al Green, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Curtis Mayfield, Sly & the Family Stone. Absolute legends at the peek of their careers.

What was great about the show and watching these performances in this collection is just that, they were performances. The musical acts performed live. Other shows of the era were well known, but the musicians lip synced. Who wouldn’t want to hear Natalie Cole sing live? Lionel Richie and The Commodores? Marvin Freakin’ Gaye? That’s what separated Midnight Special from other shows, the talent truly shined through.

Even though a lot of the songs are before my time I grew up with parents and older family who loved music. To see Al Green sing I’m So Tired of Being Alone on the show is amazing. Most of these artists fill my playlists so I could easily blow a weekend watching this. This 10-disc set is over 130 uncut performances and on top of it it includes a bonus DVD featuring “The Midnight Special Presents Marvin Gaye In Concert From The Atlantic Stadium,” a rare, historic live concert performance filmed exclusively for The Midnight Special in 1974 and available for the very first time anywhere. Are you kidding me? A rare Marvin Gaye concert? That’s worth it alone. That man oozed sex appeal and half the population born in the 1970s was because of him.

On top of the musical performances are bonus interviews with some of the biggest talent in the world. James Brown, Teddy Pendergrass, Gladys Knight, Patti LaBelle and the man himself Quincy Jones just to name a few. Add in a 40 page book with photos of the stars and this makes for a fantastic gift. It’s not too early to start thinking about the holidays.

As someone who grew up listening to this music and these artists Burt Sugarman’s The Soul of Midnight Special is a must own. Not one disc disappoints and you’ll find yourself losing hours watching it.
