In this third installment of the adrenaline-fueled action franchise, super-assassin John Wick (Keanu Reeves) returns with a $14 million price tag on his head and an army of bounty-hunting killers on his trail. After killing a member of the shadowy international assassin’s guild, the High Table, John Wick is excommunicado, but the world’s most ruthless hit men and women await his every turn.
What We Thought:
I am a huge fan of the John Wick franchise. The first film was a surprise that came out of nowhere. The second film was one of my most highly anticipated films of 2017 and it didn’t disappoint. So needless to say I was highly looking forward to John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. What did I think of it?
I clapped and cheered and smiled and had a total blast with it as usual. It opens with John Wick’s one hour time period of escape closing in on him. He hits up a doctor to get repaired, a library for some personal items and then time runs out on him. It’s open season on John Wick and bam the action hits and hits hard. Motorcycles, horses, swords, guns, hand to hand combat, it has it all.
John is able to then leave the US and tries to find help to fix his situation. He meets up with an old friend, Halle Berry who’s new to the series, and there’s a crazy fight sequence with dogs and guns and it’s awesome. I want a spin-off movie of Berry’s dogs doing their thing. John then seeks a higher power to help overturn his excommunicado. At the same time a new woman comes along telling Ian McShane and Laurence Fishburne they have seven days to get their affairs in order. John is allowed back to the States which sets up one final showdown (or maybe not, I won’t ruin it).
Keanu Reeves proves yet again he is the best action star of the past 20 years. These films are super violent, but also showcases his talent as an action actor. Not only has he gone through rigorous gun training, but he’s clearly practiced different martial arts that he gets to show off in fight sequences. He shows no signs of aging or slowing down and I want more!
I also liked that we get to see more of Ian McShane and Lance Reddick. Reddick’s character even gets to kick a little ass. Mark Dacascos may be known for Iron Chef America today, but he was a world renowned karate champion in the 1980’s and was in some fight movies in the early 1990’s. He’s done other action movies and TV shows, but it’s great seeing him doing big time action again.
You know what? I could go on an on about John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, but I’ll keep it simple since you know whether or not you want to see it. If you liked the first two, you’ll like the third. If you aren’t familiar with them, go see them now. It’s my favorite action franchise outside of Asia and I’ll keep watching them as long as they make them.
