Narrated by Academy Award® winner Jennifer Lawrence, A Beautiful Planet is a breathtaking portrait of Earth from space, providing a unique perspective and increased understanding of our planet and galaxy as never seen before.
Made in cooperation with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the film features stunning footage of our magnificent blue planet – and the effects humanity has had on it over time – captured by the astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS). From space, Earth blazes at night with the electric intensity of human expansion – a direct visualization of our changing world. But it is within our power to protect the planet. As we continue to explore and gain knowledge of our galaxy, we also develop a deeper connection to the place we all call home.
Narrated by Academy Award® winner Cate Blanchett, Journey to the South Pacific will take moviegoers on a breathtaking IMAX® adventure to the lush tropical islands of remote West Papua, where life flourishes above and below the sea.
Join Jawi, a young island boy as he takes us on a journey of discovery to this magical place where we encounter whale sharks, sea turtles, manta rays, and other iconic creatures of the sea. Home to more than 2000 species of sea life, this exotic locale features the most diverse marine ecosystem on Earth. An uplifting story of hope and celebration, Journey to the South Pacific highlights the importance of living in balance with the ocean planet we all call home.
What We Thought:
Mill Creek Entertainment this week released 4K versions of two IMAX favorites A Beautiful Planet and Journey to the South Pacific. Both films are absolutely gorgeous in 4K. They are beautiful films in the first place, but wow is the 4K stunning. It’s honestly the first time I really thought 4K stood out from other formats. Both films are great for schools and home entertainment.
A Beautiful Planet shows Earth from space with the help of NASA. Astronauts aboard the International Space Station show us their daily life with amazing footage inside and outside the station. You’re getting two lessons in this film, what it’s like to be an astronaut and what our planet looks like from space.
The photography is amazing as you see what Earth looks like at different times of day and how we’ve changed it. But I also really liked seeing the personal sides of astronauts. An average person would lose their minds up there, but you see them at work and play and even staying in shape. It’s narrated by Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence, but it’s really about the astronauts and Earth which is good to me. Watch a clip here:
Journey to the South Pacific is just as gorgeous. The scenery is so breathtaking it almost looks fake. Narrated by Oscar winner Cate Blanchett, you follow a young island boy named Jawi through beautiful backdrops.
I’ve always loved the ocean and water (I grew up on the ocean in New England) so this was right up my alley. You see all kinds of creatures, fish, plant life and more. It’s a complete 180 compared to space but just as stunning. It’s also a teaching moment to show how important the ocean’s eco-system is to humankind. Watch a clip here:
