Hey guys & gals, Zach here, I wanna give you guys my thoughts about Diablo’s future.
It’s been a while since we’ve had some fresh content for Diablo 3, the last major update was the Necromancer pack that was announced at Blizzcon 2016 and came out February of 2017. That’s 15 months ago! Diablo is arguably Blizzard’s least cared for franchise when it comes to updates and new content, which is a shame because the first Blizzard game I played was Diablo 1 when I bought it at a yard sale when I was eight.
Okay, my dad bought it but I played that game a shit ton, probably more than he did!
But I digress, I’m here to talk about the possibility of Diablo 4 and see if the signs are pointing in that direction. Before we come to a definitive answer, we need to look at the clues, so like any good detective, let’s look at the facts!
The fact is that there’s this job posting for a Dungeon Artist for an ‘unnamed’ Diablo project. The first thing I thought was it could be another expansion, but then I remembered that Diablo 2, for all its popularity, had only 1 expansion and an 11 year gap between Lord of Destruction and Diablo 3.
As good as Diablo 3 was, it never rose to Diablo 2 levels of acclaim or popularity. In fact, I know plenty of us Diablo fans have been waiting for “Diablo 2 Remastered” but that never happened. The last big content release was Reaper of Souls, which released on March 25, 2014, OVER 4 YEARS AGO. So that’s 4 years of seasons without MAJOR story updates, and over a year without any new playable classes added. So we’re due for something.
But is that *Something* Diablo 4? Well, since Diablo 1 only had the Hellfire Expansion and Diablo 2 only had the Lord of Destruction Expansion, I think it’s safe to say that the trend will continue into Diablo 3 where it will only get one expansion. So that leaves us with the job posting asking for a ‘Dungeon Artist.’ Which means we’re getting new dungeons at the least, but to what end? New major dungeons for a game that launched in 2012? I can’t see that really happening. And no ports to the Switch would require new dungeons, as popular as that rumor is.
So taking all this information into account, I think that it’s safe to say that this is something separate from Diablo 3. But how do we know what it is? Well, if it’s not Diablo 3 related, and it’s not another port, it would then be a whole new game, which in a series that likes to move the franchise forward, would be Diablo 4.
