SYNOPSIS

In the epic finale to the Maze Runner saga, Thomas leads his group of escaped Gladers on their final and most dangerous mission yet. To save their friends, they must break into the legendary Last City, a WCKD-controlled labyrinth that may turn out to be the deadliest maze of all. Anyone who makes it out alive will get answers to the questions the Gladers have been asking since they first arrived in the maze.

What We Thought:

Did you watch the first two Maze Runner films? Well if you did, you might as well watch Maze Runner: The Death Cure. I remember seeing the first two movies and not minding them compared to other Young Adult films, but the only thing I really remembered was them escaping the maze in the first one and then the sort of zombies in the second. I didn’t remember too many plot points or characters other than Dylan O’Brien. That probably hurt my overall enjoyment of the third film because I simply didn’t know too much that was going on.

Clearly as a single, childless, adult male I’m not exactly the target audience for this franchise and I’m fine with that. I do think they are a lot more watchable than The Hunger Games, Twilight, and Divergent movies. They aren’t as cheesy and there isn’t a blatant love story holding it back. Ok, yes, O’Brien’s character does like the girl from the first movie, but it’s not ridiculously in your face throughout the franchise.

As for this film, it’s not as entertaining as the first two. It also suffers from being way too long. Seriously, what is with the majority of movies being over 2 hours lately? I don’t mind a 2 hour long movie if it deserves to be 2 hours. This shouldn’t be any longer than an hour forty, tops. It lost my interest at times and should have focused more on the Last City. Once they get there the action is pretty good and a lot happens. There’s way too many steps along the way though.

I didn’t like a lot of the special effects in this one. The Last City is really fake looking from the outside and the explosions and action look like your standard CG nonsense of today. There is a death of a character that looks straight out of a Spiderman movie. I didn’t even recognize Walton Goggins at first, but once I realized it was him, I was wondering what Skeletor was doing in the movie. Just too much fakeness for me.

Maze Runner isn’t the biggest franchise in the world and this third film, Maze Runner: The Death Cure had to halt production because of a bad injury to Dylan O’Brien while filming. The movie was supposed to come out sooner and I wonder if too much time has passed. I know I didn’t remember much from the previous films including most of the characters. I also never read the books, but I’m sure those who have will be interested in the last installment. This film will do alright at the box office, but I think Young Adult adaptations will be dead for a while. If you are a fan of the movies and books then for you, this is…
