In the latest terrifying installment of the legendary SAW series, law enforcement find itself chasing the ghost of a man dead for over a decade, embroiled in a diabolical new game that’s only just begun. Has John Kramer, the infamous Jigsaw Killer, returned from the dead to commit a series of murders and remind the world to be grateful for the gift of life? Or is this a trap set by a different killer with designs of their own?
What We Thought:
Jigsaw continues and opens a new door for the Saw franchise. Overall I enjoyed the film, but I have issues with it and those issues are going to be hard to talk about without spoiling the twist. It is a Saw movie after all so of course there is a twist.
This latest film has all the contraptions and games you expect. There is blood and gore and I’m cool with that. I like the series and this latest fits right in. It’s only about an hour and a half long, it flows pretty quickly and there aren’t too many dull moments. It looks and feels like a Saw movie so if you are into them, you’ll like this and is worth seeing.
Now I’m going to struggle to word this next part without ruining the story. The cops think Tobin Bell’s John Kramer is back from the dead as bodies pile up. They find his DNA and have a recording of his voice. Is it Kramer or a copycat? Well I won’t say. When they explain everything, I don’t know if I love the explanation. Yes you need a way to continue the franchise if you want more movies, but I didn’t love that twist. This movie did over $100 million worldwide on a $10 million budget so the series is definitely continuing.
I know that doesn’t say much, but I’m being nice not to spoil things dammit! If you’ve seen the previous films you know they use time jumps and apprentices and other things like that so you should kinda know what I’m talking about. If you haven’t seen any of the previous films you shouldn’t be watching this in the first place.
The home video release is a must own for fans. There is a great 7 part documentary called I Speak for the Dead: The Legacy of Jigsaw in the bonus features that fans will like a lot. It also takes a look at the props in the film which is cool. The movie looks and sounds amazing in HD as well.
Jigsaw continues the series without reinventing the wheel. It’s able to continue the story into the future as well. If you like the franchise and haven’t seen Jigsaw, check it out.
