Michael Fassbender (X-Men series), Rebecca Ferguson (Mission: Impossible—Rogue Nation), Charlotte Gainsbourg (Independence Day: Resurgence) and Academy Award® winner J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) star in The Snowman, a terrifying thriller from director Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), based on Jo Nesbø’s global bestseller.

When an elite crime squad’s lead detective (Fassbender) investigates the disappearance of a victim on the first snow of winter, he fears an elusive serial killer may be active again. With the help of a brilliant recruit (Ferguson), the cop must connect decades-old cold cases to the brutal new one if he hopes to outwit this unthinkable evil before the next snowfall.

What We Thought:

Despite a fantastic cast, The Snowman is a mess. I walked out of the theater with more questions than answers and I’m not even sure I understood any of it in the first place.

There are characters that allegedly connect to one another but I’m not sure they do. The killer doesn’t make sense. His backstory does, but who ends up being the killer seems rushed. There are flashback scenes that really aren’t necessary. Same for Val Kilmer’s character. I’m a Val fan and he’s not necessary to the film. He’s connected to another character, but it’s not required and seems forced. Toby Jones is in it. He goes away and comes back just long enough for you to remember Toby Jones was in the movie.

Then there’s J. K. Simmons. He plays a guy trying to bring a sporting event to Oslo. I’m not even sure what it was, the Winter Olympics? Soccer’s World Cup? I’m not sure. He seems to be connected to a bad guy who might be in the sex slave industry. Again, I’m not sure. I think he was a doctor, but kept a girl in his house and flashes her boobs at Simmons. Your guess is as good as mine and I saw the damn movie.

The worst part is, the film should be great. The setting and backdrop totally works. It has beautiful scenery and lots of things to look at whether it’s mountain ranges, small towns, big cities or just the snow itself. It’s a perfect spot for a murder mystery. The killer’s backstory is perfect for a serial killer. You completely understand why he hates what he hates and kills what he kills. All of it should have worked, but it didn’t.

I’m a big Michael Fassbender fan. I’ve been a fan of J. K. Simmons for years. I like Val Kilmer and Rebecca Ferguson. I love a good murder mystery. Despite all that, The Snowman really didn’t work for me. It could be this year’s Gone Girl, but it’s really not.
