Emma, a brilliant but awkward app designer, moves to San Francisco after a massive betrayal by her boyfriend with only her beloved pets, an adorable cat and an energetic mutt, in tow. One night, drawn by the light of a Supermoon, Emma’s pets escape into the night and are transformed into full-grown men, forcing Emma to reconsider her outlook on dating and hilariously work out her trust issues.

What We Thought:

I’m not much of an animal person so I watched Unleashed for the cast. Is it a movie I loved? No, but I do think the target audience will find it cute. Someone like my sister who enjoys Lifetime and Hallmark movies would probably like it.

It’s your typical romantic comedy style of film. Kate Micucci’s boyfriend steals her idea for an app, she replaces him with a cat and a dog. She moves and Sean Astin plays a maintenance type guy who leaves the door open and the pets scamper off. A supermoon turns them into real men who want to win her affection, etc., etc.

Again, not really my type of thing, but I can see people thinking it’s cute. You know who she’ll eventually end up with and that it will have a happy ending. Do you really expect something different from a movie like this?

I will say Justin Chatwin either had a ton of fun doing this film or absolutely regrets it. He plays the cat turned human character and when he’s human, he still acts like a cat. He walks a runway as a model and does all kinds of movements a cat would. He also licks himself during the movie and other cat like things. Maybe he owed someone a favor and had to do this movie.

Unleashed doesn’t bring anything new to the table. It doesn’t rewrite the rules of romantic comedies, but that’s fine. If you don’t expect too much from it you might enjoy it. If you’ve never heard of anyone in the cast, it’s not for you.
