In “Annabelle: Creation,” several years after the tragic death of their little girl, a doll maker and his wife welcome a nun and several girls from a shuttered orphanage into their home. They soon become the target of the doll maker’s possessed creation, Annabelle.
What We Thought:
Annabelle: Creation is a prequel to a prequel of a movie that has a sequel and after seeing this film, don’t expect the franchise to stop any time soon. For those who don’t know, Annabelle: Creation is a prequel to Annabelle which was a prequel to The Conjuring which had its own sequel. I know a lot of people loved The Conjuring, but I saw it with a terrible audience who ruined the film and because of that, I’m not really a fan of the franchise. I thought even less of Annabelle so I didn’t have high expectations for this.
As for this current movie, it’s exactly what you expect. There are jump-scares and dumb characters and no originality whatsoever. This time around we see the creation of the Annabelle doll and two parents conjuring up some bad voodoo after the death of their daughter. They take in some orphans and a nun and things start to go weird. Of course no one wants to believe any of it until it starts getting more violent. Like I said, no originality.
My biggest problem with these movies (and most “horror” movies of today) is that I simply don’t find them scary. Seeing a door slowly start opening or closing, seeing a doll head move or hearing weird noises does nothing for me. Give me an old school slasher flick any day. I don’t believe in ghosts or any paranormal mumbo jumbo so I sit there bored while the audience “reacts” and talks back to the movie. They are all the same movie to me just with different actors.
The young girls in the movie are perfectly fine. I’m sure one or two of them will make a career out of it like most actors/actresses from horror flicks. One of my favorite younger actresses today is Joey King and she was in the first The Conjuring so expect one of these youngsters to become a star.
I will give Annabelle: Creation a lot of credit for tying into Annabelle. They did a great job connecting the two films and make sure to stay till AFTER the credits to see a post-credit scene that connects and expands the franchise universe even more. I don’t care for these movies and I honestly can’t see myself seeing any more of them. Not one of them scares me or has any originality to them. But they keep making them because people keep seeing them so if you like them, you’ll probably like this. If like me you find them dull, don’t waste your time or money.
