In the next installment of the blockbuster franchise, UNDERWORLD: BLOOD WARS follows Vampire death dealer, Selene (Kate Beckinsale) as she fends off brutal attacks from both the Lycan clan and the Vampire faction that betrayed her. With her only allies, David (Theo James) and his father Thomas (Charles Dance), she must stop the eternal war between Lycans and Vampires, even if it means she has to make the ultimate sacrifice.

What We Thought:

Overall I don’t mind the Underworld franchise. The first film is obviously the best, but you can’t go wrong with Kate Beckinsale in leather (minus the one movie she’s barely in). Underworld: Blood Wars was pretty DOA at the box office and after seeing it now, I understand why.

There’s nothing exactly wrong with the movie, but it isn’t very good either. It definitely feels like the 5th movie in a franchise that lost its legs. Beckinsale’s Selene is being hunted by both Vampires and Lycans. The vamps want revenge for her killing of an elder and the Lycans want her daughter Eve who she has hidden. She teams up with Theo James who I actually forgot was in the last movie. They leave it open for a follow-up film, but after it disappointed at theaters I can’t see it getting made.

The biggest issue with the film is how fake it looks. It relies heavily on CGI and I’m just not a fan of that look. Yes it’s commonplace nowadays and you need it to make werewolves and vampires, but the film looks like it was shot in front of a green screen with not much else. Some of the mansions have set design, but a lot of the outside scenes are totally fake looking. Gone are the days of Selene shooting her way through a floor. Now it’s her and Theo James climbing up a mountain with a knife and jumping.

Because it was shot digitally and uses heavy CGI, the 4K looks stunning though. The film has a dark color palette, but looks crystal clear at the same time. The Lycan transformations and muzzle flash really pop in 4K. Sound quality is superb as well and I actually had to turn down my volume at times it was that loud.

If you are a fan of the franchise then watch Underworld: Blood Wars. It’s not unwatchable or anything, but I did find my attention span wandering at times. Beckinsale still looks great in the role, I just wish there was more to the film than CG effects.
