Adapted from the 2010 graphic novel by Joe Casey and Chris Burnham, OFFICER DOWNE concocts a hyper-real Los Angeles for the story of a savage L.A. policeman who is repeatedly resurrected and returned to active duty via dark science technology. When a rookie officer named Gable (Tyler Ross, V/H/S/2) is recruited as back up, he discovers there’s much more to the titular super-cop (Kim Coates, “Sons of Anarchy”) than a mindless law enforcement drone warring against a twisted rouges gallery of over-the-top super-villains.
What We Thought:
Officer Downe could have been really good. It’s watchable, but just doesn’t live up to what it could have been.
It’s watchable because Kim Coates is always good. I think he’s an underrated actor. He plays a cop who keeps coming back to life to fight the criminals in Los Angeles. It’s sort of Deadpool meets RoboCop just not as good as that sounds.
There’s some great violence and action which is what I want in a movie like this. Because Officer Downe can be restored and come back, he gets shot a lot, has his hand sliced off, gets stabbed and beaten repeatedly. Plus he also goes around destroying people. It’s what I want in a graphic novel turned film.
My biggest complaint is the post production. A lot of the action is over produced and CG looking. There’s a lot of muzzle flare added in post and I understand that’s commonplace in today’s digital filmmaking world, it doesn’t mean I have to like it. It takes me out of it because it looks so silly.
I’m not familiar with the graphic novel so I can’t comment on how close the film follows it. The film is violent so I’m assuming it gets its storyline from the novel. I don’t know if the novel continues beyond one book, but they definitely left the film open to a sequel.
We here at The Nerds Templar are big Kim Coates fans. From Sons of Anarchy to Goon, we love him in everything he does. I think being a fan of his helps the enjoyment level of Officer Downe. It’s far from a great movie, but Coates is good and there is some quality violence/action. If you are familiar with the graphic novel I say check out the movie.
