hellraiserSynopsis:

Stephen King was once quoted as saying: “I have seen the future of horror… his name is Clive Barker.” That future became reality when, in 1987, Barker unleashed his directorial debut Hellraiser – launching a hit franchise and creating an instant horror icon in the formidable figure of Pinhead.

Barker’s original Hellraiser, based on his novella The Hellbound Heart, follows Kirsty Cotton (Ashley Laurence) as she comes head-to-head with the Cenobites – demonic beings from another realm who are intent on reclaiming the soul of her deviant Uncle Frank.

Picking up immediately after the events of the original Hellraiser, Hellbound: Hellraiser II finds Kirsty detained at a psychiatric institute and under the care of Phillip Channard, a doctor who abuses his position to realise his own dark aims. In Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth, a reporter investigating a mysterious death at a nightclub finds herself in the way of Pinhead and the Cenobites, who plan to bring their horrifying world into our own.

Coming at a time when the genre was degenerating into self-parody, Hellraiser offered a fiercely unique vision that approached its horrors with a far greater degree of seriousness than many of its contemporaries. Along with its sequels, the Barker-produced Hellbound and Hell on Earth, Arrow Video is proud to present some of the most terrifyingly original films in the history of horror in brand new 2K transfers.

What We Thought:

I hadn’t seen the original Hellraiser film in probably 20 years. I remember it and remember seeing some of its sequels at that time. I quite enjoyed this new Hellraiser: The Scarlet Box Limited Edition Trilogy box set. You get three films with tons of bonus features plus a fourth disc filled with Clive Barker goodies.

The first film introduced the world to Pinhead although he’s not in it nearly as much as I remember. For such an iconic horror villain, he’s barely in it. It’s definitely more the story of Frank, the mother and the house. Kirsty is the protagonist with Frank more of the bad guy. I forgot how little Pinhead and his cohorts were in it.

The second film continues with Kirsty dealing with the outcome of the first film. She thinks the mother could come back like Frank did in the first film. The third film uses a reporter as its lead dealing with Pinhead.

I know a lot of people who love the Hellraiser franchise. I always liked Phantasm more. I enjoyed watching the films for the first time in years, but I would definitely pick other franchises ahead of this one.

I will say this new box set is a masterpiece. The films look great restored. Well they never looked great in the first place, but they do look better now. Audio is top-notch with easy to hear dialogue and score. Plus this box set is a bonus features fan dream come true. You can spend months looking at everything in the four discs.

If you are a fan of the franchise or in horror in general then definitely pick up Hellraiser: The Scarlet Box Limited Edition Trilogy. I’ve always enjoyed the movies even if I thought Pinhead was more involved in the earlier ones. This is a fantastic box set for horror fans.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
