BAD SANTA 2 returns Academy Award®-winner BILLY BOB THORNTON to the screen as America’s favorite anti-hero, Willie Soke. Fueled by cheap whiskey, greed and hatred, Willie teams up once again with his angry little sidekick, Marcus (TONY COX), to knock off a Chicago charity on Christmas Eve. Along for the ride is ‘the kid’ – chubby and cheery Thurman Merman (BRETT KELLY), a 250-pound ray of sunshine who brings out Willie’s sliver of humanity. Mommy issues arise when the pair are joined by Academy Award®, Golden Globe and Emmy- winner KATHY BATES, as Willie’s horror story of a mother, Sunny Soke. A super butch super bitch, Sunny raises the bar for the gang’s ambitions, while somehow lowering the standards of criminal behavior. Willie is further burdened by lusting after the curvaceous and prim Diane, played by Emmy Award- nominee CHRISTINA HENDRICKS, the charity director with a heart of gold and libido of steel. You better watch out: BAD SANTA 2 is coming to town.
What We Thought:
Bad Santa 2 isn’t the classic the original film is, but it has a lot of laughs and I had a lot of fun with it. In a year with terrible comedies, it’s one of the better ones.
I’ve liked the first film since the first time I saw it. Christmas is perfect for a raunchy comedy and Billy Bob Thornton’s Willie was as raunchy as you could get. He, like the Grinch, grew a bit of a heart towards the end and it showed his true character. His scenes with the young Thurman Merman were hysterical.
This time around he doesn’t have as many scenes with Brett Kelly’s Thurman, but they are still really funny and full of heart. Kelly is a young adult now playing a young adult version of Thurman and I’m glad they brought him back for it.
Tony Cox also returns, but Lauren Graham does not. She’s replaced with Christina Hendricks as a potential love interest for Willie. Kathy Bates joins the cast as well as Willie’s mother. Every cast member gets laughs and characters that fit them perfectly.
This time around we see Willie still down on his luck. He’s drinking more and Marcus (Cox) convinces him to help rob a charity in Chicago. He runs into his mother who’s part of the gig and Thurman eventually makes his way there as well. Hendricks’ character runs the charity and has a past Willie finds interesting. They all have good chemistry together and I like seeing Bates and Hendricks in less serious roles.
2016 has been a bad year for comedies. Most of the ones I’ve liked have been smaller indie, dark comedies (The Lobster, Don’t Think Twice, Everybody Wants Some!!!). The only real mainstream comedy I remember liking disappointed at the box office (Keanu). At least with this I genuinely laughed and enjoyed myself.
Bad Santa 2 is a good way to kill 90 minutes. If you liked the first one, you’ll like this sequel. It’s been a long time since the first film, but unlike Zoolander 2, I had fun watching this one.
