Boldly continuing where Star Trek: The Original Series left off, these animated adventures chart the progress of Captain Kirk and his crew in a universe unconstrained by “real-life” cinematography! With all characters voiced by their original actors, join Kirk, Spock, Bones and the crew for 22 new adventures: to boldly go where no animation has gone before!

What We Thought:

I hadn’t seen Star Trek The Animated Series in years and really enjoyed rewatching it in this new Blu-ray collection.

The Animated Series continues the story started with the Original Series after its cancellation. At points the Animated Series does more with effects because it’s animated that wasn’t possible to do with the practical effects at that time. One episode Kirk, the Enterprise and its crew end up inside a creature which would have never been impossible in the live action TV show.

At other times, the Animated Series sticks to the Original’s look especially when characters are transported. They take the look of the live action beaming up/down and make it look the same and hold it way too long as well. I actually like that.

Most of the original actors do all the voiceover work as well. William Shatner is joined by Leonard Nimoy, George Takei, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan and Nichelle Nichols. The only voice/character from the original not in this series is Walter Koenig’s Chekov.

This collection also comes with some fantastic illustrations along with the Blu-ray. These are worth the price alone. The Blu-ray looks great although it being 40+ year old animation, don’t expect the look of Pixar or Dreamworks.

If you are a Star Trek fan, definitely pick up Star Trek The Animated Series: The Animated Adventures of Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek. This new Blu-ray set is a worthy addition.
