THEY’RE NOT STAYING DOWN THERE, ANYMORE!
From the subterranean depths it crawls! Finally making its long-awaited debut on Blu-ray, director Douglas Cheek’s cult ’80s favorite C.H.U.D. is the ultimate underground movie experience.
In downtown Manhattan, a police captain’s hunt for his missing wife leads to the discovery of a series of mysterious disappearances in the area. Extending his search into the tunnels and sewers below the city streets, it soon becomes clear that something monstrous is lurking in that subterranean world – and it won’t stay there much longer…
Starring John Heard (Home Alone) and Christopher Curry (Starship Troopers) alongside an early appearance from John Goodman, C.H.U.D. has justifiably built up a huge cult following in the years since its release in 1984, with one of the most iconic creature designs of the period.
What We Thought:
C.H.U.D. is a movie I remember renting from the video store in the 1980’s. I probably hadn’t seen it in 20 or more years and forgot John Goodman plays a random cop in the film.
Watching it now it’s definitely a very 1980’s creature feature. It looks 1980’s. It sounds 1980’s. It has special effects that are very 1980’s. It has a young John Heard, young Daniel Stern, etc.
All that being said, I quite liked the movie. It’s not great by any means, but we here have a soft spot for 80’s creature films. They aren’t quite zombies and you don’t see much of them till the end, but Stern and Heard are good throughout.
It’s a similar story we’ve seen in other horror films of this time. There’s a conspiracy involving the government because homeless people are disappearing. The government or a corporation accidentally creates some monsters thanks to some toxic sludge and try to cover it up. Nuclear waste was still a sticky situation back then.
The new restored version looks pretty good. This film didn’t look flawless in the first place, but this package is worth it. Picture quality is good. The campy/cheesy effects look good. Audio is really good with easy to hear dialogue and actions. This package has some great bonus features including commentary, trailer and brand new interviews.
C.H.U.D. is a nice little cult classic. If you were a fan growing up, definitely pick up this new restored version. If you like 1980’s flicks, definitely pick it up as well. I’m happy to add this to my collection.
