Synopsis:

Cracker County is under attack and lovesick dog catcher Bubba Blanche has been transformed into a ferocious, cigar smoking werewolf just in time to save the day. But first he’s got to conquer a beer or two. And maybe a plate of chicken wings. “Bubba the Redneck Werewolf” is based on Mitch Hyman’s long running comic book series of the same name.

What We Thought:

Bubba the Redneck Werewolf isn’t the hidden gem/cult flick I was hoping it would be, but it’s still a solid watch. B-movie fans will like it for sure though.

I’m not familiar with the comic series it’s based on, but the name alone made me want to love it. I love B-movie horror comedies like Helen Keller vs Nightwolves and Tucker & Dale vs Evil. I can watch them today and laugh throughout. I laughed at this, but I don’t know if it will be as good a year or so from now with another watching.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s still worth seeing and is a fun watch, but I guess I wanted a bit more. The opening song is pretty awesome and I did love the effects. Those are big positives. I guess I wanted to laugh from start to finish and I didn’t.

The lead playing Bubba as the werewolf was quite good too. He’s funny, pulls off the look and yet shows a lot of range in the costume/makeup. A weaker lead and it could have been really bad, but he handles the comedy well.

The side characters who make deals with the devil are also good. You see what people are willing to sell their souls for. I liked the bar setting and the regulars as well especially the female bartender. I liked her no-nonsense attitude.

I think the best way to describe Bubba the Redneck Werewolf is your own personal reaction to the title. If it sounds like a movie you’ll like it, you will like it. If you think it sounds stupid, it’s not for you.I know it sounds like I didn’t like the film, but that’s not true. I just wanted a bit more from it. It’s still a fun watch that I’ll tell a lot of friends to see. Because of that, it is…
