Hank (Paul Dano) is stranded on a deserted island, having given up all hope of ever making it home again. But one day everything changes when a corpse named Manny (Daniel Radcliffe) washes up onshore. The two become fast friends, and ultimately go on an epic adventure that will bring Hank back to the woman of his dreams.
What We Thought:
Swiss Army Man is one of the most bizarre films I’ve seen in years. It’s also one of my favorite movies of 2016.
The film got crazy buzz coming out of festivals and all you heard about the film was that Daniel Radcliffe played a corpse that farted. There’s much more to it than that (I think). Sure he farts and that actually helps Paul Dano’s character, but he also gets erections which help Dano’s character as well. It’s not just a farting corpse movie, it’s Harry Potter’s penis compass too!
If you think I’m making that up, I’m not. The movie is so over the top it’s hard to even describe. Dano wants to commit suicide, but see’s Radcliffe’s corpse on the beach and they have adventures together. There’s a love interest and an emotional ending and so much in between.
On top of the two fantastic lead performances, the direction and style of the film are also great. The Daniels use their music video experience to create this amazing world between their characters. It’s visually stunning and features a fantastic soundtrack and score. It reminded me a lot of Michel Gondry’s work. I think it compares quite well to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind or Be Kind Rewind.
The Blu-ray is a must own. It looks amazing in HD. The visuals and ocean backdrop shine on your big screen. The soundtrack sounds perfect. Bonus features include a Q&A with the directors, featurettes, commentary and deleted scenes.
Swiss Army Man will most likely stay in my top 10 films of 2016. It’s completely out of the box and nuts and I totally dug it. I never got into Harry Potter, but the more I see of Radcliffe, the more I’m impressed. Dano is always good and the two have great chemistry together. You’ll either hate it or love it.
