What We Thought:
I’ve seen the Back to the Future movies, but I’m no fanboy like others. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the films, but it’s probably been 20 years since I’ve seen one. That being said, I still quite enjoyed Back in Time.
I’m a film nerd. I write about movies, I work in movies, I make movies. I’m the geek bonus features are on a DVD for. I watch featurettes and making ofs so the first part of this documentary is right up my alley. It gets into the production side of the film. How studios passed on it thinking it was a Disney movie. How Disney passed on it thinking it was about incest. It took Robert Zemeckis having a hit with Romancing the Stone to get it off the ground once and for all and Steven Spielberg supporting it.
It even has some photos and footage of Eric Stoltz as Marty McFly. Zemeckis talks about shooting with Stoltz even though he wanted Michael J. Fox and Stoltz not feeling right in production. He talks about cutting Stoltz despite being in production and filming with Fox at night because he shot his television show during the day.
The film then gets into the movie’s pop culture effect. It discusses the DeLorean and how Ford tried to buy their way into the movie and have it be a Mustang and not the iconic DeLorean. It gets into the DeLorean fan club and how people collect and modify the car to look like the movie version. One guy even owns a DeLorean from the movies (along with a few other vehicles from the films) and a group of fans help get an original movie version restored.
There are all kinds of Back to the Future fandoms that this discusses. There’s a band that dresses like characters and plays songs from the movie. There’s celebrity cameos in it discussing their appreciation of it. People like Dan Harmon (Community, Rick & Morty) talk about its effect on them.
If you are a fan of the franchise then Back in Time is a must own for you. Even if you aren’t a crazy diehard, it’s still a fascinating look at how movies get made and their effect on people and pop culture.
