Synopsis:

In an epic adventure directed by Jon Favreau (Iron Man), Mowgli, a man-cub raised in the jungle by a family of wolves, embarks on a captivating journey of self-discovery when he’s made to abandon the only home he’s ever known. Featuring an all-star voice cast including Bill Murray, Ben Kingsley and Scarlett Johansson, The Jungle Book is “stunning” (Todd McCarthy, The Hollywood Reporter).

What We Thought:

I missed The Jungle Book at the theater and watching it now, I wish I hadn’t. It must have looked fantastic on the big screen. I also see why it was a big hit.

First of all, the original animated version was a bit hit and I know many people who enjoyed that movie that went and saw this. This is a bit darker, but overall the same characters are there and it’s a whole lot of fun. Fans will like this a lot.

I think part of the reason I didn’t see it originally is because I’m not a big fan of CG films especially with live action mixed in. Movies like Warcraft and Avatar don’t do much for me. I think the difference here is all the animals are CG where the boy is live action. He’s not a mix of both, he’s just a boy. Maybe, I don’t know, but I know the look of the movie didn’t bother me which a lot of times CG films do.

The voice cast is pretty amazing. Bill Murray voices Baloo and is perfect. Same for Idris Elba as Shere Khan. Idris has that deep, disturbing voice that is outstanding for a cartoon villain. You can never go wrong with Ben Kingsley or Christopher Walken doing voices either. Scarlett Johansson slithers (pun intended) and Lupita Nyong’o is quite good as well.

In fact, I liked everything about the film. It flows like an animated film, but the young actor, Neel Sethi, captures the youthfulness and awkwardness of Mowgli flawlessly. You know he’s not actually in a jungle, but there’s so much movement in Jon Favreau’s film, it seems like he’s there amongst the animals, eating, drinking, climbing and running. Again, I wish I saw it on the big screen.

The Blu-ray looks pristine perfect. The colors and jungle shine bright in HD. Audio is top-notch with easy to hear dialogue and score. Yeah the musical score is pretty awesome too. Bonus features include commentary and more.

Disney’s The Jungle Book is as good as you’ve heard. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like it. From my nephews to older adults, no one has a bad word to say about it. I now see why. It’s a lot of fun. It’s a great family film. It’s a great film for fans of the original animated movie. The voices are incredible and Elba is eerily good. Nothing more to say besides…
