From producer James Wan (“The Conjuring”) comes a tale of an unknown terror that lurks in the dark. When Rebecca left home, she thought she left her childhood fears behind. Growing up, she was never really sure of what was and wasn’t real when the lights went out…and now her little brother, Martin, is experiencing the same unexplained and terrifying events that had once tested her sanity and threatened her safety. A frightening entity with a mysterious attachment to their mother, Sophie, has reemerged. But this time, as Rebecca gets closer to unlocking the truth, there is no denying that all their lives are in danger…once the lights go out.
What We Thought:
Lights Out is the latest paranormal, jump-scare “horror” film to hit theaters. I put horror in quotes because they aren’t horror films to me. None of these “horror” films do much for me.
It’s the latest The Conjuring, Insidious, Paranormal Activity clone. They all seem to make money and they’ll keep making them till they don’t. I can’t explain why they do or why people like them.
I went into this one with an open mind too. A friend of mine had sent me the short film this was based on and I liked that a lot. I thought the trailer for this was pretty good too. So despite not liking most of the films this is similar to, I thought I was going to like this one.
I didn’t hate it, but I don’t know if I actually liked it either. I doubt I’d watch it again. It relies heavily on jump-scare tactics. I hate that, with a passion. This film didn’t scare me in the slightest, in fact, I don’t remember even flinching. People for some terrible reason find these scary and one guy behind me was, as the kids today say, “losing his sh*t”. How? Why? Have you ever seen a movie before? This is a by-the-books paranormal film, there’s nothing we haven’t seen before.
That’s unfortunate too because the premise is good. The idea of only seeing ghosts/creatures with the lights off can be super creepy. There were a couple of potentially good scenes, but they went the cheap route and tried to make people jump out of their seat.
The thing is too, it was shot pretty cool. There’s a scene where a gun is shot and the ghost is seen and not seen in between muzzle flashes. That was super cool. Unfortunately, that’s about the only highlight.
I’m clearly not the audience for films like Lights Out. I might as well stop going to see these types of films because I walk out disappointed every damn time. But they keep making them because people keep seeing them. So if you liked Insidious, The Conjuring or any of those types, then for you, this is…
