New to Me is a series here at The Nerds Templar where we discuss a film that has been out for a while. It’s most likely available on DVD or streaming services, but it’s our first time seeing it. Hence, it’s “New to Me”!

Honeymoon

Review:

Honeymoon is a solid drama that you really can’t guess till the end. It reminded me of other films I’ve seen before, but I’m ok with that.

Rose Leslie from Game of Thrones and Harry Treadaway (Penny Dreadful) play newlyweds Bea and Paul on their honeymoon. They stay at Bea’s family’s cottage on a remote lake. Everything starts out fine until Bea is found in the woods naked and not remembering things.

Leslie and Treadaway have good chemistry together and I think the film works because of it. At its core, it’s your basic “In the Woods” type film with a twist at the end. It’s not a horror/slasher flick, but it’s still two people secluded and wondering what’s going on around them.

But for a movie you’ve probably never heard of, it’s worth a watch. I thought it was pretty smart. It never really laid out any rules so it didn’t break any of its own rules (a situation a lot of films do nowadays). It has good pacing and never really feels slow which is usually a major issue with a one location, small cast film as well.

I’m quite surprised at how much I actually liked it. I didn’t think it would be bad or anything, but online sources give it a medium grade and to me it’s a solid 7 out of 10 type film. It doesn’t try to be something it’s not and I appreciate that.

I think some people might not have liked the ending. Yeah it’s a bit ambiguous, but I’m ok with that. It never quite explains everything that happened and how, but I don’t think it really needed to either. You get the gist of it, but I understand why someone might have an issue with it.

Rose Leslie continues to impress me and she was quite good in Honeymoon. The film moves well and is made well. If you want a nice little drama you’ve never heard of, then this is…
