Created by Steve Levinson (Entourage, Boardwalk Empire), Ballers is an all-new HBO comedy that explores the sun-soaked world of a group of past and present football players in and around Miami, FL. Leading the pack is Spencer (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson), a retired football superstar who is trying to find a foothold as a financial manager to current players. In an industry where the career span is unbelievably short, Spencer and his crew must figure out where the game ends and life begins, all while keeping their cool and having each other’s backs.

What We Thought:

Ballers The Complete First Season is pretty much Entourage, but with athletes instead of actors. I liked it and I’ll watch new seasons, but it will be one I binge and not wait to see week to week.

I love The Rock. He’s charismatic and funny. I love Rob Corddry. He’s one of the funniest people in Hollywood. They work really well together. Dwayne Johnson is this monster of a man, but Corddry holds his own opposite him. I liked their dynamic quite a bit. It was funny seeing Corddry telling Johnson what to do because he’s the one that got Johnson the job at the agency.

I think the supporting cast works quite well too. Dule Hill is always good. John David Washington (son of Denzel Washington) definitely shines as running back Ricky Jerret. The younger Washington had a cup of coffee in the NFL in real life. He definitely put his name on the map and will soon get offers for other projects. Omar Benson Miller will also see more offers because of the show. As the recently retired player who wants to come back, he captures that “What now?” personality perfectly. And I’m shocked he’s not related to Forest Whitaker because he looks like a younger version.

The show itself isn’t anything all that original. Entourage showed us what the Hollywood life was like for young, good looking, rich dudes. This series shows what the football life is like for young, good looking, rich dudes in Miami.

Don’t get me wrong, I have no problem with that, I just don’t think it’s anything we really haven’t seen before. There’s lots of naked ladies, money, drugs, booze, fast cars and more naked ladies. People might not like that, but that’s the reality of the lives these people live.

The show looks fantastic on Blu-ray. The colors of the scenery, the football field, the ocean, the houses and cars really pop in HD. Audio quality is flawless with a great soundtrack and easy to hear dialogue.

Ballers Season 1 isn’t groundbreaking television, but I’m ok with that. It’s a fun watch. It’s entertaining and funny. Sometimes you need a less serious show to binge and be entertained. For that reason, the show is…
