New to Me is a series here at The Nerds Templar where we discuss a film that has been out for a while. It’s most likely available on DVD or streaming services, but it’s our first time seeing it. Hence, it’s “New to Me”!

I’ve been a big fan of the Ip Man series and Donnie Yen for years. We here at The Nerds Templar are really excited to see him in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story later in the year. I’ve wanted to see Ip Man 3 for a while although I had one reservation about it.

For some reason Mike Tyson is in it. Mike Tyson with his giant face tattoo is in a movie about mid 20th century China. After finally getting to see Ip Man 3, I have to say, Tyson isn’t too bad actually.

The film follows the formula of the first two movies and I’m ok with that. Master Ip is trying to live his life, be with his family, teach some Wing Chun. But then gangsters start bothering the school principal and a crooked property owner tries taking over and Master Ip must step up.

Donnie Yen, as usual, is fantastic as Ip Man. Even as he gets older, Yen is flawless with his technique and handles the stunts perfectly. I have no idea how a man can throw so many punches so quickly or use his legs as dangerously as Yen. Fans of the series will definitely enjoy seeing him in action again. The fight sequence in the boat being built is fantastic as is the final fight with the different weapons.

I also liked the addition of Jin Zhang. He goes toe to toe with Yen at times and he’s pretty darn good himself. I’m now looking forward to seeing him in Kill Zone 2 with Tony Jaa and I think he could handle his own franchise as well. He as the build, style and abilities to be a leading man.

Going back to Tyson, I really wasn’t sure what to expect from him. It’s one thing to have a cameo as himself in The Hangover, it’s another thing to play opposite the likes of someone like Donnie Yen. But he wasn’t bad. He has some dialogue and a fight scene and he handled his own. It’s not super over the top or unbelievable and I think Iron Mike still has “it”. He can still throw a punch and has some speed left.

If you are a fan of the Ip Man series (and if you aren’t, you should be), you’ll definitely enjoy Ip Man 3. This is the true third movie, not Ip Man: The Final Fight which doesn’t have Donnie Yen in it. I liked The Grandmaster, but to me, the Yen Ip Man films are better. If you like martial arts films, Donnie Yen and the Ip Man films, then Ip Man 3 is definitely…
