Synopsis:
A New Kind of Weapon. A New Kind of Hero.
Jan-Michael Vincent stars as Stringfellow Hawke, a reclusive renegade pilot who’s assigned to top-secret missions for the CIA by the mysterious Archangel(Alex Cord). Hawke’s weapon of choice is the high-tech battle helicopter of the future, Airwolf. Loaded with cutting-edge surveillance equipment and unbelievable firepower, Airwolf takes Hawke and his friend Dominic (Ernest Borgnine) around the globe in search of dangerous international spies and criminals.

What We Thought:
Airwolf was an “adult” show I got to watch as a kid. It was similar to other shows in the 1980’s like The A-Team and Knight Rider.
It’s most similar to Knight Rider. You have a cool, good looking guy with an amazing vehicle. Jan-Michael Vincent didn’t have a talking car, but he had a badass helicopter he used to stop criminals.
Rewatching Season 1 today, the show is pretty cheesy. Most of these shows are cheesy by today’s standards, but this seems even more so.
I think it’s the production value. It was probably pretty mind blowing 30 years ago, but it’s sort of laughable today. Don’t get me wrong, I actually like that it’s not super CGI like what we get nowadays. But I’d be lying if I didn’t snicker at some of the wardrobe, hairstyles and effects.
The show is classic 80’s too because you have the buddy comedic relief. Even if it wasn’t supposed to be funny, something about Ernest Borgnine always made me laugh. He’s a legend in my eyes.
Stand out episodes are, when they were hired by the movie producer to do stunts, the Cuba episode, and the competition after the simulator.
Airwolf Season 1 has been on DVD before, but thanks to Mill Creek, anyone can afford it. If you grew up watching the show and want to remind yourself what it was like, now’s your chance. The show isn’t great and it’s pretty funny by today’s standards, but I still had fun watching it again. Because of that, it is…
