What We Thought:
I remember growing up watching reruns of Have Gun – Will Travel with my parents as a kid. My parents loved Westerns and still watch them today. I do as well.
Rewatching a bunch of episodes from this complete series box set, I have to say, the show still holds up. It holds up because of Richard Boone.
Boone was perfect casting for Paladin. He was pretty tall for that era and very rugged. He fit the gun for hire perfectly. He had swagger, the looks, the sound, the face, everything you want in that role. He had a way about him.
That’s what I liked about the show, even though it’s about a man hired for his gun slinging, he was a gentleman about it. He was a mix of classic good guy living by his own code and a great marksman. He didn’t shoot anyone that didn’t deserve it and only went after bad guys.
The show also has a lot of familiar faces. The legendary Hal Needham had a nice run in it. The outstanding character actor Harry Carey Jr. was in a dozen or so episodes. The late, iconic George Kennedy can be seen in a few as well. You can also see a very young Charles Bronson as Ben Jalisco in 5 episodes.
Watching Have Gun – Will Travel was a good way to reminiscent about growing up. I first saw the show 20-30 years after it originally aired and now watching it again, you can see why it lasted well over 200 episodes. Richard Boone captured every element of the Old West gunslinger magnificently. The show was very well made for its time. It was also very well written including over 20 episodes by Gene Roddenberry of Star Trek fame. This Complete Series box set is a must own for fans of Westerns and because of that, it is…
