Synopsis: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is an upcoming animated adventure comedy film based on the 2007 video game Super Mario Galaxy and its 2010 sequel, as well as Nintendo’s broader Mario franchise. The sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, it was directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and written by Matthew Fogel.
What We Thought:
Did your kids enjoy The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023? Well they will love The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. My 7 year old nephew will eat this movie up. Him and his friends will have a ball with it and that’s great. It’s going to make a fortune and I expect a third film in a few more years.
As for me, well, that’s a different story. Despite being a huge fan of Illumination movies. Despite being a huge fan of Chris Pratt and Charlie Day. Despite being the first generation to grow up on the Super Mario Bros, I don’t like these movies in the slightest. I didn’t like the first one and I have the same response to this one, they simply aren’t for me.
And you know what? I’m ok with that. Kids can have kids movie. I hope the movie does a billion at the box office and kids cheer and laugh. I’m a childless, adult male, who cares if I don’t like it? It’s an animated movie for kids, I should be investigated if I did like it. Over the past 30 years thanks to Pixar, Dreamworks, Illumination and other studios who released animated movies, us adults have been convinced that all animated movies can be for adults. We got movies that were for kids but had enough adult parts that we enjoyed them just as much as the kiddos. Basically we got pandered to and now we expect every movie to pander to our needs. These don’t.
If I was a 7 year old I’d love it. You need the attention span of a kid to enjoy it. I sat there not having a clue what was going on despite being familiar with the games and characters. Characters bounce from world to world, land to land and I can’t tell you what was happening. But it’s colorful with tons of characters that your son and daughter will love.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will be a hit at the box office despite my issues with it. I honestly don’t know why these movies are called Super Mario because it’s Princess Peach who is the star. The Italian plumber brothers play second fiddle yet again in their own franchise. This one adds another princess so your daughter can have two to pick from. I sat there bored with it, but the little boy in the back was laughing so that’s all that’s important. Take the kids to it, they’ll have fun.
