Synopsis:

A 13th century samurai finds himself shipwrecked on an island he believes to be deserted. As he contemplates his existence, it seems like a dignified death at his own hands might be his best solution. However, when he is captured by the murderous cannibal tribe that calls this island home, his survival instinct kicks in.

What We Thought:

Have you ever wondered if a pirate killing samurai could defeat an island of cannibals? Well have I got the movie for you! It’s called Lone Samurai and sure it sounds like the filmmakers threw darts at the wall to figure out their plot, but I have to be honest, the film’s a heck of a lot of fun.

We first meet the samurai while he’s killing pirates on a boat. He crashes onto an island where initially he thinks he’s alone. After being attacked he realizes it’s himself versus an island of male cannibals! The movie is as ridiculous as that sounds, but again, it’s fun because it knows what it’s trying to do and doesn’t do anything else.

The action is top-notch especially the final action sequence on the beach. If I’m going to watch something ridiculous I want the action to be over the top. I don’t need a film like this to make sense or even have a plot, just give me swords, a dude from The Raid: Redemption and lots of violence.

Lone Samurai won’t be for everyone, but I dug it. If you watched Bone Tomahawk and wondered what it would be like as a Japanese Samurai period flick and not a western, well you’re in luck. It’s relatively short so it doesn’t wander too far from what it’s trying to do. The lead actor is fantastic and holds your attention throughout. The violence is great and it looks like a period flick on a cannibalistic island. If you want to watch some violence and shut your mind off for 90 minutes I definitely recommend it.

Country of Origin: Japan

LONE SAMURAI has a runtime of approximately 95 minutes and is rated R for strong bloody violence and gore.
