This adult animated musical series follows Charlie, the princess of Hell, as she pursues her seemingly impossible goal of rehabilitating demons to peacefully reduce overpopulation in her kingdom. After a yearly extermination that was imposed by Heaven, she opens a hotel in the hopes that patrons will be “checking out” after proving their souls are redeemable.

What We Thought:

I can’t say I knew Hazbin Hotel: Season 1 existed before this Blu-ray set came my way. Despite it being an animated show, it’s definitely not for children. It’s for adults, but I can’t say it was something I became a fan of. The creator has a big following on YouTube I guess, but I definitely wasn’t familiar with anything involving the show.

The series is about the daughter of Lucifer and Lilith creating a hotel to help save souls in Hell. Once a year Heaven wipes out many souls in the overpopulated Hell and she thinks that’s wrong. She wants people to repent and not be exterminated by Heaven. As the next Extermination Day approaches Angels and Sinners will do battle.

The biggest takeaway from the show was I wasn’t expecting the musical numbers. I had no idea it was a musical as well as a dark, adult comedy. Songs come out of nowhere and don’t always fit in to me. I’m not a musical guy, but others might be into it. I’m also not sure if I liked the animated look of the series. It wants to appeal to anime fans I guess, but it looked too box-y for me.

Hazbin Hotel: Season 1 is 8 episodes over 2 discs. Episodes are around 30 minutes so it’s an easy binge. I watched the season over two nights. It’s not something I’d go out of my way to watch again, but for those under 30 looking for an adult cartoon you’ll probably enjoy it. If are you familiar with the pilot episode that is on YouTube or its spinoff series you’ll like it too.
