Synopsis: In an afterlife where souls have one week to decide where to spend eternity, Joan (Elizabeth Olsen) is faced with the impossible choice between the man she spent her life with (Miles Teller) and her first love (Callum Turner), who died young and has waited decades for her to arrive.

What We Thought:

Eternity is yet another surprise gem from A24 in 2025. Before they started winning awards A24 was known for off-beat flicks and this quirky love triangle is a return to those early days. I can see it making my top 10 of the year.

The reason it resonated with me is because I’m at a point where my parents are getting up there in age. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year and seeing the older couple in the beginning reminded me of them. The husband character dies and he is transported to an afterlife where he looks the age he was his happiest. In this version he’s played by Miles Teller. He learns that he has a week to pick where he will spend eternity. He’s not 100% sold on everything happening to him and he wants to spend eternity with his wife.

The wife character then dies and she gets transported to an afterlife where she looks the age she was her happiest. In this version she’s played by Elizabeth Olsen. She gets caught up with what’s happening, but there’s a catch, her first husband (Callum Turner) has been waiting decades for her. Teller is confused by all this and both men try to win the heart of their wife. Will she choose the man she spent most of her life with or the man who went off to war and died and didn’t get the chance with her they both wanted?

As dark as that sounds, it’s really not a dark comedy. It’s more of a romantic comedy which I’m normally not a fan of, but it absolutely works. Olsen is just gorgeous and you’d understand why two men would fight over her. Turner wants the life he feels he deserved and Teller wants to be with the woman he spent decades with. You know exactly what you’ll get out of Lizzie Olsen, who’s always charming, but it’s Miles Teller who surprised me. It might be his best performance to date and I sat there wondering where this version of Teller has been. He captures that everyman who loves his wife with ease and despite feeling for Turner’s military character, it’s Teller’s performance who the audience will be rooting for.

The supporting cast is also great. Da’Vine Joy Randolph and John Early play afterlife coordinators, two workers in the afterlife who are there to explain everything and help the recently deceased make their decisions. Randolph crushes her supporting role yet again and might be my Best Supporting Actress for 2025. Her and Early have great chemistry and bring heart and laughs.

Eternity goes on a bit too much in the third act, but it’s honestly one of my favorite surprise films of 2025. The cast is great and if you can relate to the story it’ll sit with you for a while. It’s Teller’s best work and Olsen is always easy to watch. If you’re looking for a fun, heartfelt adult flick then it is…
