We Will Schlock You is a series at The Nerds Templar where we take a look at bad B-Movies, So-Bad-They’re-Good, Over-the-Top Ridiculous, most likely to involve sharks schlock. Movies that are so bad you can’t help but enjoy them.

I’m ashamed of everyone who has ever met me for not telling me about The Cat. I’m ashamed of myself for not knowing it existed. It is a cinematic B-Movie Masterpiece from the early 1990s and after watching it I knew it was going in the We Will Schlock You category.
If you aren’t familiar with the film it’s about a cat, a young girl and guy who all happen to be aliens from outer space. It opens with a guy getting angry at his neighbors upstairs so he goes up there to complain about the noise. The next morning the neighbors are leaving so he breaks into the apartment and discovers something that gets the cops involved. The investigator cop brings the neighbor to dinner who tells the story to a writer who seems to know more about it than he should. Or maybe he’s making it all up. Does any of it make a lick of sense? Probably not, but what you’re watching is just absolutely bonkers and you sit there mesmerized by it. Did I understand the creature that attacked in different parts? Nope. Did I understand how they actually got home and the artifacts they had to steal? Nope. Did I understand why two were able to get human bodies and one had to be a cat? Nope. Did I care about any of that? Absolutely not.
You’re probably asking why I’m talking about some random, early 90s Asian flick. Well, I’m bringing it up because an awesome Blu-ray box set of the film came out this week and I popped in the disc and had an absolute ball with it. It is laugh out hilarious with fantastic practical effects and early 90s special effects. The cat vs. dog fight in the junkyard and the shootout in the pool (that somehow catches fire with just alcohol) are amazing. I had to go back and watch the cat vs. dog fight after the movie was over it’s that good. I don’t know if it’s known in the US, but if it is I’m genuinely mad I hadn’t seen it before. This new box set is sweet with slipcover artwork, heavy duty box with artwork and cool booklet inside so if you know of the film, this collection is pretty neat.
The Cat is part horror, part sci-fi and part comedy. The practical effects are amazing and it makes me wish films still used practical effects today. The times the cat goes from a real life cat to a puppet are hysterical especially opposite the dog or when it’s stuck in the trunk lid. The creature effects are also great. I loved the ridiculous violence especially the pool shoutout with the liquor bottles used as Molotov cocktails and the bad guy shooting up all the books in the house. The film is a perfect mix of effects and ridiculousness that makes it a prime candidate for MST3K or RiffTrax. If you are a fan of the movie this new Blu-ray box set is a must own. If, like me, you haven’t seen it before, you have to find it. It’s the perfect blend of the cast & crew not taking it seriously, fantastic effects and total absurdity.
