Alma (Valeria Rowinski) is in her thirties and still not sure if she’s ever really had an orgasm. After a series of unhealthy relationships and disappointing hookups, she decides to ignore family pressures and societal expectations in order to more fully explore her sexuality. Letting go of her inhibitions at a “play party” with mutual friends, she experiments with BDSM and discovers a new world of eroticism she has never experienced before. Written, co-directed by and starring Argentine filmmaker Valeria Rowinski, VAINILLA is a sensual journey into untapped pleasures and hidden desires.

What We Thought:
Ever watch a movie and not understand why it was made? That was my reaction to Vainilla. I understand the point of the film, but who was made it for? Is there a big enough audience for a film like this?
It’s about a woman who doesn’t think she’s ever had an orgasm. She’s had random hookups and relationships and decides to get into BDSM because maybe kink will be her thing. The movie shows her breaking up with a guy, having random sexual encounters then being in a group dynamic that opens herself up to non-traditional sexual elements.
It’s straight forward, but also pretty forgettable. It might be the least sexy sex movie I’ve ever seen. The people in it aren’t unattractive or anything, but nothing about the film stands out in a “wow, I can’t believe that happened” aspect. Even being a kink movie, it feels vanilla.
I’m sure there will be people who love Vainilla and think it’s groundbreaking. I’m a guy and maybe it didn’t resonate with me because of that. It’s a quick watch which I appreciated because the main character and what was happening had no real backstory. It gave me no reason to care about anyone involved other than the main character not having orgasms. It wasn’t for me.
