When Yogiri Takatou and Tomochika Dannoura are transported into another world along with classmates, they seem to be left out when others are gifted with amazing superpowers and the chance to become Sages. Are they doomed to become dragon bait? Or could it be that they already have a few special abilities of their own from back home that no one is expecting? That would be extremely helpful, as there aren’t many people left they can trust, least of all their now power-mad former classmates and the Sages who supposedly “defend” this world in MY INSTANT DEATH ABILITY IS OVERPOWERED!
What We Thought:
My Instant Death Ability is Overpowered Complete Collection is a 2-disc, 12 episode anime series based off My Instant Death Ability Is So Overpowered, No One in This Other World Stands a Chance Against Me!, a set of Japanese Young-Adult style novels.
The series is sort of an Anime Lord of the Flies with students transported to another world with a sage giving all the students but two special abilities. Yogiri slept through the ceremony that gave the others powers and along with Tomochika they are left to be dragon food. But it turns out Yogiri does have powers, the ability to kill with a thought.
On paper that ability seems cool for an Anime, but unfortunately the series feels off because of it. They give other characters backstories just to ultimately die. At times the story feels anti-climactic because you can guess what’s going to happen. I’m glad it was only 12 episodes because any more and it would have felt repetitive.
It’s weird that there are things I liked about the show and things I didn’t at the same time. It has some comedic elements and is predominantly light in tone. It’s an easy watch and I binged it over 3 or 4 days. I also liked that there isn’t a beat you over the head love story. Sometimes these newer Anime shows are heavy on romance and love stories, but this doesn’t really go beyond a crush. But I didn’t love the animation style. For a newer Anime, I thought it looked not as polished as other shows from the past few years.
If you are looking for a light Anime with comedic elements and powerful lead then My Instant Death Ability is Overpowered Complete Collection is for you. It gets going pretty quickly, but does wander at times just to reach a conclusion to most characters you see coming. I’m not familiar with the novels or web-series so I can’t tell you how accurate it is compared to the source material, but it’s entertaining enough even if I didn’t love the animation style or somewhat repetitive character angles.
