V/H/S/Beyond the seventh installment of the V/H/S franchise will feature six new bloodcurdling tapes, placing horror at the forefront of a sci-fi-inspired hellscape.
What We Thought:
V/H/S/ is one of the most popular horror anthology series going and with V/H/S/Beyond they add in a science fiction element. Instead of the typical urban legends, killers and paranormal spirits, the 7th installment gives us aliens, spaceships and space travel.
Like all anthology stories, some are better than others. There’s a prologue which is a running story throughout the film. That is about a Redditor finding some tapes that might prove aliens exist. That prologue story continues in between the other stories.
Stork is the first main story and is about missing babies and a team investigating a house to find the kids. There are zombie type creatures and an alien that came from a crashed meteor. Dream Girl is about the next big Bollywood actress and the paparazzi out to get footage of her and her new video. There’s more to the Dream Girl than meets the eye. Live and Let Dive is about a group of friends who go skydiving for a friend’s birthday and things go south when a UFO is spotted. This one probably had the best creature when you see it in the grove.
Fur Babies is directed by Christian Long and Justin Long (yes that one). It’s about an animal rights group investigating a doggy daycare. Of course there’s much more to it than dogs. Stowaway is about a woman investigating sightings in the Mojave Desert. She soon finds herself trapped in a spaceship.
I like that V/H/S/Beyond went with a sci-fi angle because some of the more recent installments of the franchise were more miss than hit for me. Not every story here was interesting, but with the sci-fi bits it at least felt new. Stork was probably the best, but I liked the way Live and Let Dive was shot and looked. If you like the V/H/S/ franchise you’ll enjoy this latest one.
