Synopsis: A high-powered CEO puts her career and family on the line when she begins a torrid affair with her much younger intern.

What We Thought:
Babygirl is getting a whole lot of praise and award buzz especially for Nicole Kidman’s performance. I must have seen a different movie because what I saw was a film you laugh at, not with. I thought it was corny and called it Fortune 500 Shades of Grey.
I get that the movie is trying to show a different side of aging women and I respect that. 2024 has definitely been a year for slightly older actresses in strong lead roles. You have Kidman in this, Demi Moore in The Substance, Pamela Anderson in The Last Showgirl and Amy Adams in Nightbitch. But just because a film is trying to do something different doesn’t make it good.
Kidman plays a CEO who starts an affair with an intern. Usually Hollywood movies have it as the older male with younger female and this film flips the switch to show that women over 50 can still be sexual and desirable. I have no issue with that, but the fact they made it into a dom/submissive situation is what makes me laugh. Seeing a woman of Kidman’s caliber crawling like a dog for a treat is a joke. The scene with “Father Figure” playing made me laugh out loud. I didn’t think Kidman and her intern had any kind of chemistry together and I just sat there waiting for the whole thing to blow up in their faces.
That’s the biggest issue with the film, you know they will get caught. They are not sly about it in the slightest. Being seen together, going to a rave and other situations is not what you do when you’re having an extramarital affair. Someone will see something and everything you built, your career, your marriage and family is all gone in an instant. She’s supposed to be this smart CEO type yet she didn’t hide this affair at all.
Others seemed to like Babygirl way more than I did. I found myself laughing at what I was seeing more than anything else. Kidman is fine, but the film is too much of a joke for her to stand out. Antonio Banderas is underused and I sat there waiting for the wheels to fall off. It didn’t work for me.
