Marvel Studios’ “Deadpool & Wolverine” delivers the ultimate, iconic, cinematic team-up throwdown on July 26.

What We Thought:

If you read my theatrical reviews enough you normally see a synopsis above the first picture before I get into what I think of the movie. Well for Deadpool & Wolverine there isn’t really an official synopsis. The reason for that is because the film doesn’t really have a plot. That’s not a negative on the film because the movie actually works because of it. I’ll explain without spoiling cameos and other surprises.

There are a couple of things you need to remember or know to understand what I’m talking about. One, in the comic books and movies, Deadpool (played by Ryan Reynolds in the flicks) knows he’s a comic book character. He breaks the fourth wall and makes real world references including actor names, movie trivia and historical elements. Second, the rights to the Deadpool character in previous movies belonged to 20th Century Fox. He and other Fox owned characters like the X-Men and Fantastic Four have not been in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But since Disney (who owns Marvel) now owns Fox, they have the rights to all those Fox characters and have to find a way to introduce them to the MCU. That’s the plot of Deadpool & Wolverine. Deadpool (knowing Disney bought Fox) must find a way to save his universe (the Fox timeline) from extinction by combing through other universes (like MCU’s sacred timeline) and with the help of Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) keep his friends (characters) from fading away. The movie does a better job of explaining it since I can’t spoil things.

But let’s be honest, the plot of Deadpool & Wolverine is irrelevant. If you are a fan of either or both characters you simply want violence, crazy action and non-stop jokes from the Merc with the Mouth. And in that aspect, the film over delivers. I probably hadn’t laughed at and with a film this much all year if not longer. I love the first two Deadpool films so I was eagerly awaiting this one especially with the addition of Logan. I knew the jokes would be there because Ryan Reynolds pretty much is Deadpool/Wade Wilson in everything he does, but with the addition of Hugh Jackman’s Logan/Wolverine to the movie, I knew the action would be doubled as well. The movie opens with an onslaught of violent chaos and never takes its foot off the pedal. For years fans have wanted to see these two characters from the Weapon X Program team up or fight each other and fans will thoroughly enjoy what they are given. Katanas, guns, Wolverine claws, little knives, you name it and Deadpool or Wolverine killed someone with it. Despite now being Disney, the latest Deadpool movie very much keeps its R-Rating from the Fox years. Blood, destruction, explosions, enough F-bombs to make Quentin Tarantino proud, it’s very much R-Rated and not for the wee ones.

The only real negative I have for Deadpool & Wolverine is that characters/locations might not make sense to some people who haven’t seen the Loki Disney+ series. I haven’t seen the second season, but I did see season one so I knew of the organization Deadpool is brought to and how he’s able to jump timelines. Movie goers who may not have seen Loki might be a bit confused at first. Other than that the film is damn near perfect. It’s filled with countless cameos I won’t even hint at or confirm despite internet rumors. It has a fantastic score and soundtrack (you’ll have a Madonna song stuck in your head for days). It’s pretty much 100% fan service giving fans the team-up they’ve dreamed of with Wolverine wearing the blue & yellow costume fans have wanted to to see for years. The first time he puts on the mask my inner fanboy smiled. It is everything you want from the characters with laughs, crazy references and cameos, hardcore violence and also a ton of heart. It’s going to make an obscene amount of money and I’m ready to see it again.
