Synopsis:

A mother (Julia Louis-Dreyfus, in a profoundly moving performance) and her teenage daughter (Lola Petticrew) must confront Death when it arrives in the form of an astonishing talking bird. From debut filmmaker Daina O. Pusić, Tuesday is a heart-rending fairy tale about the echoes of loss and finding resilience in the unexpected.

What We Thought:

If I told you exactly what happens in Tuesday you would think I’m on drugs. It would also make you wonder what Julia Louis-Dreyfus did to get blackmailed into working on the film. I’m joking somewhat, but boy is this a bizarre film.

Going into the screening I had no idea what the film was about. I hadn’t read the synopsis or watched the trailer. I really enjoyed the film JLD was in last year so I decided to see this one. After watching the film, I still don’t think I have a clue what it’s about. Five minutes into the movie I leaned over and asked a friend if this was the right movie, that’s how odd it is.

If you don’t want to know a thing about it, quit reading here. JLD plays a mom with a sick daughter. The film opens with a bird who is death. The bird goes to visit the daughter who convinces the bird to let her say goodbye to her mother first. JLD is out blowing off work and the bird ends up bonding with the sick girl. Her mother eventually comes home and discovers what is happening and decides to take matters into her own hands. If the movie wasn’t weird to begin with it certainly took a path down an even weirder road. It’s hard to explain without spoiling so I won’t go any further.

With as crazy as it is, I still give everyone credit for trying something new. I don’t think it sticks the landing, but days later I’m certainly still thinking about it and JLD’s performance. It’s from A24 and it reminded me of a lot of their earlier films like Swiss Army Man before they started getting nominations and winning awards. A24 was the studio that put out different types of movies and despite really not seeing the point of this, it’s definitely something different.

Tuesday will have Julia Louis-Dreyfus fans scratching their heads. It will be a movie some people claim to be brilliant while others call it trash. It gets originality points, but it’s going to be a movie that comes and goes at theaters and will hit streaming and get views out of curiosity. I don’t know who I’d recommend it to, but if you want something so mind boggling weird, give it a try.
