Synopsis:
The Homecoming Show (2014)
Anjelah Johnson-Reyes has been dazzling audiences on the big screen, on television and during her live performances across America with her hysterical characters and ironic humor. With a huge female following and the ability to cross over to both Mid-western mainstream and Hispanic fan-bases, Anjelah’s new show leaves you smiling after an evening full of belly-laughs. A new comic super-star has emerged!
Mahalo & Goodnight (2017)
Filmed at the Hawaii Theater in Honolulu, Hawaii, Anjelah Johnson-Reyes’ fourth stand-up comedy special dishes on awkward massages, home invasions, spiders and being a full-grown child.
Breakin’ Out The Park (2008)
In this brutally honest stand-up performance Owen confesses his hilarious history of growing up in and around trailer parks. Owen packs a comedic punch and this incredible live performance is not to be missed!
#DoinWhatIDo (2019)
In #DoinWhatIDo Gary Owen hilariously bridges the “lanes” of black and white cultures as only he can, both in his home and on social media. From Black Twitter, his daughter’s homecoming date, to the rules of when we can and cannot use the N-word, no one does it better!

What We Thought:
I’ve been enjoying Mill Creek Entertainment’s Stand-Up Spotlight comedy releases, but this was the first week I can genuinely say I wasn’t familiar with either performer. I’ve usually known the comedian or had been familiar with their work, but I can’t say I knew of either Anjelah Johnson-Reyes or Gary Owen.
Anjelah Johnson-Reyes best joke is about wearing heels while being bow legged. She jokes about how when she wears heels to the club she looks like she rode a horse there. It’s a funny bit because her husband likes women in heels. She’s also good at making fun of the people in her life without really being mean. After watching her specials I remembered her from MadTV and two characters she was known for then.
Gary Owen’s best bit is about the use of the N-word. He opens up about Roseanne being fired from Roseanne for insensitive tweets and the whole routine is funny. He talks about watching the spelling bee on TV and using those words instead of that word. He’s married to a black woman and he hears the word in his own house and took pride in his wife calling him it in bed. It’s a pretty funny bit because of his delivery. Although his joke about being a cop in the Navy and letting a guy go for a DUI because he had driven all the way for Tijuana and had not got caught made me genuinely laugh out loud too.
I’ve been enjoying Mill Creek’s Stand-Up Spotlight releases, but these are two of the weakest ones for me. If you are a fan of Anjelah Johnson-Reyes or Gary Owen you’ll love them, but I wasn’t a fan and can’t say I walked away a fan either. I’ve seen a lot of stand up live in person and I can’t say I’d pay to see either one of them after watching their specials.
